Step 3: Subfloor Prep — Leveling uneven concrete slabs or pouring self-leveling compound underlay.
Frequently Asked Questions: Flooring Plank Estimator (LVP, Hardwood & Laminate)
Common questions about bag calculations, ordering bulk vs bags, and trade standards.
How much flooring cutting waste should I add for LVP or hardwood?
Add 10% cutting waste for straight, square room installations. Add 15% to 20% for diagonal planks, herringbone patterns, or older homes with out-of-square walls, alcoves, and numerous doorways.
How many square feet are in a box of Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)?
Most standard LVP and laminate cartons contain between 20 and 24 square feet. Engineered and solid hardwood boxes generally cover 18 to 22 square feet. Always round up to the nearest whole box.
Does Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) require underlayment?
If your LVP has a pre-attached IXPE or cork acoustic backing pad (standard on most premium planks), do NOT install secondary soft foam underlayment, as excess cushion causes locking joints to snap underfoot. Over concrete slabs, install a 6-mil polyethylene plastic vapor barrier.
What expansion gap is required around the perimeter of floating floors?
Leave a 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch (6 mm to 10 mm) expansion gap between the flooring edges and all vertical walls, door jambs, and cabinet islands. Cover this gap with baseboards or quarter round shoe moulding.
How do I calculate how many linear feet of baseboard or quarter round I need?
Measure the perimeter of the room in linear feet and subtract the width of doorway openings (typically 32" to 36" per door). Add 10% for miter cuts and splice joints.
Can you install click-lock LVP over uneven subfloors or tile?
Floating click-lock planks require a subfloor flat to within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot radius. Depressions must be leveled with self-leveling underlayment compound, and high spots sanded down, or the click mechanisms will creak and fail.
What wear layer thickness should I buy for LVP flooring?
Buy a minimum 12-mil (0.3 mm) wear layer for low-traffic bedrooms. For busy households with children and dogs, choose a 20-mil (0.5 mm) commercial-grade wear layer for superior scratch and dent resistance.
How long should hardwood flooring acclimate before installation?
Solid and engineered hardwood planks must acclimate in the climate-controlled installation space for 3 to 7 days before laying, allowing wood moisture content to equalize with indoor ambient relative humidity.
What is the difference between SPC and WPC vinyl plank flooring?
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) has a rigid limestone-composite core that is dense, dent-resistant, and 100% waterproof. WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) has a foamed core that is thicker and warmer underfoot, but softer under heavy furniture legs.
How do you transition flooring between rooms of different heights?
Use an engineered T-moulding for floors of equal height, a reducer strip when transitioning to a lower floor (like sheet vinyl), or a flush end-cap / baby threshold when meeting sliding glass patio doors or carpet.
